History

The Atlantic Theater Company was founded in 1983 by the playwright David Mamet and the actor William H. Macy when they began producing work with recent New York University graduates who had trained with them at the university. The Atlantic Acting School was born out of intensive workshops in Mamet’s technique and philosophy of the theatre that founding company members taught.  The technique became known as Practical Aesthetics and is now referred to as the Atlantic Technique.
